One of the Tech Women Celebration 50 - women changing the ratio of the tech workforce
Swansea born Lucy Chieffo has been with the DVLA for eight years. Her early career developed in the contact centre but looking to the digital profession, Lucy saw the opportunity to develop professionally but also apply the customer service skills that she honed within the contact centre to a digital career.
When Lucy joined the Service Desk, the overall department had just undertaken a major reorganisation which had brought several services in-house. Whilst navigating this new way of working and IT support the vision was developed for the service desk to become the gateway into IT both for staff looking for a career in IT but also to bridge the gap between IT and the business.
Under Lucy's leadership and transferable skills from the contact centre, the service desk has gone from strength to strength. It was the first Government service desk to achieve accreditation, and then became the first four-star accredited Government service desk the following year. This recognition has created opportunities for staff, culminating in award nominations and wins, and being contacted by other government departments for advice and guidance on improvements they can make.
Lucy has also wasted no-time in making sure that others can benefit from her success within the digital profession. She has become a role model, internally and externally and is a digital voices advocate for DVLA. She has provided insightful input at the DVLA International Women's Day celebrations and volunteered for Women in STEM Technology events. Lucy was also awarded IT Team of the Year (led by a woman) at the Women in IT UK Awards.
Lucy is a driven individual in her personal life too and completed the Swansea 70.3 Ironman earlier this year. Describiing herself as "not a natural swimmer" Lucy has taken the time to develop her skills in this area too.
