Apple attempts to derail Samsung Galaxy S III launch in US

Apple has launched another patent attack on rival Samsung, as it looks to stop the sale of the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone in the US.

Court-directed talks between Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung on 21 and 22 May have seemingly not worked as the iPhone maker brought a motion "to supplement the record regarding Samsung's Galaxy S III product", according to Foss Patents.

"Apple has been able to obtain the Galaxy S III sold in the United Kingdom and determined that this device clearly infringes at least two of the Apple patents at issue in the preliminary injunction motion for the exact same reasons as the Galaxy Nexus," the Apple motion reads.

The Samsung phone is currently scheduled to go on sale in the US on 21 June after the UK release on 29 May but Apple wants to stop its US launch.

"Samsung believes Apple's request is without merit," Samsung responded in a statement. "We will vigorously oppose the request and demonstrate to the court that the Galaxy S III is innovative and distinctive," reported Bloomberg.

Last month, Apple filed for a preliminary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet being sold in the US.

In the past two years, the two companies have faced each other in court in nine countries on four continents as they grapple for leadership of both the smartphone and tablet markets.
