Channel 4 migrates to Windows 7 and Office 10

New PCs and new software on the cards as broadcaster's IT team moves back into refurbished offices

Channel 4 is preparing to migrate to Windows 7 and will be installing Office 2010 over the coming weeks.

The shift is to comes at a time at which the broadcaster's is undergoing refurbishment at its head office in London.

New PCs will also be brought in to Channel 4 and once the work is fully complete the information systems team will move back to its main office on Horseferry Road in a month's time.

The firm's IT services provider Computacenter will be responsible for implementing the migration, the broadcaster's chief information officer (CIO) told Computing.

Kevin Gallagher, CIO at Channel 4, explained that the main challenge for his IT department is to get users up to speed on how to make the most of the new software.

"We'll roll out training – short and sharp sessions. Then we'll follow that up with some floor walking, to answer people's day-to-day questions," he said.

"Sometimes after you've done the training course you'll be sat at your desk with a query and need some help. One of the important things is that people get the most of the technology.

"It's better for everyone involved if our users can really enjoy the features that the operating system has got," added Gallagher.
