BOC Gases data control upgrade drives safety
Telematics devices to monitor driver performance
Industrial chemicals company BOC Gases has installed location-based technology throughout its fleet of lorries to improve road safety and reduce risk.
Telematics devices installed in cabs transmit real-time qualitative information on speed, braking, acceleration habits and drivers’ performance.
Telematics and route compliance software was installed following a six-month trial, and after three months’ calibration, is now fully operational.
BOC Gases transport manager Andrew Smith says the initial benefit is improved safety, but it will also be used to improve driver efficiency. ‘We set a series of safety thresholds and the system records any time the thresholds are exceeded,’ he said.
‘We can measure risk in a qualitative way, and had a 50 per cent reduction in recorded incidents during the trials at centres in Bristol and Wolverhampton.’
The data, which is sent in real time and gathered during the day, is compiled into a report, allowing drivers to be debriefed immediately on their return.
Any weakness in driving behaviour is identified and drivers can receive targeted training to improve delivery and service.
Managed services firm 7Global and transport management company VSc Solutions designed and implemented the bespoke platform, installing telematics in 400 BOC vehicles across the UK.
Forrester analyst Jenny Lau says firms can generate additional benefits by improving business processes, such as scheduling, maintenance and compliance.
‘Telematics provides greater access to data, which enables firms to revamp the business and optimise processes,’ she said.
