Advisory body for .mobi launches

DotMobi Advisory Group aims to ensure the registry reflects the interests of the mobile community

A new advisory group has been launched with the aim of providing industry stakeholders with a say in how dotMobi, the registry for the .mobi top-level domain, manages the mobile internet.

The dotMobi Advisory Group (MAG) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation and will elect five of its members to the registry's Policy Advisory Board (PAB), to ensure the mobile internet is run in the best interests of its members and consumers, according to MAG chair Michael O'Farrell.

"It will make sure that dotMobi acts in the best interests of mobile community at large," said O’Farrell. "It will provide direction on policy issues, style guide issues, best practices and commercialisation initiatives."

There are four levels of membership: volunteer, associate, full and foundation membership, all with increasing levels of involvement in the MAG's activities. The foundation category is for organisations that will be charged with ensuring the body remains not for-profit and properly run, said O'Farrell.

"We felt it was important to have a grass-roots eyes and ears of the global community – compared to some domains we're in a unique position because [.mobi] pulls together the mobile and internet industries," said O’Farrell.
