Former Ofcom exec to head new Wales internet body

It will seek to promote the benefits of superfast broadband

Wales has established its own internet body, dubbed "Wales Internet Service Providers Association" (WISPA), with the aim of promoting the benefits of superfast broadband across the country.

WISPA will be headed up by Hywel Wiliam, Ofcom's former head of broadcasting and telecommunications for Wales.

The body hopes that it will be able to better drive internet competition in Wales, and it will represent the industry in dealings with Welsh Assembly Government bodies, such as the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

In December of last year the Welsh Assembly Government unveiled its broadband strategy where it aims to provide superfast broadband to all businesses by 2016, and to households by 2020.

In February of this year Chancellor George Osborne announced that Wales would receive £10m in funding to support the rollout in what will be "just the first wave of funding".
