Ofcom releases framework to allow virtual unbundling of BT network
It also proposes release of detailed information on ducts and telegraph poles
Ofcom hopes to increase competition and investment in broadband services
Independent regulator Ofcom has announced a framework that allows BT’s competitors access to the company’s existing broadband structures.
The decision will allow virtual unbundling, meaning that competitors will be able to pay for a virtual link over fibre lines laid by BT. This will allow companies to provide next-generation broadband services to their own customers.
The regulator released several reports in March this year which proposed virtual unbundling as a way of maintaining competition in the market.
It has also been stipulated that BT must share detailed information on and allow access to its underground ducts and telegraph poles. This provides competitors with the opportunity to roll out superfast broadband to areas BT has not planned to enter.
Ofcom suggests this framework will encourage the rollout of broadband services into broader areas of the UK, while promoting investment and competition.
