Demand for permanent IT staff continues to rise

Developers with the right skills are in high demand

Overall growth in demand for jobs has eased for the second month running

The latest data on labour market conditions in the UK shows that the rate of growth in the number of permanent IT vacancies increased by almost 60 per cent since May 2009.

The figures from Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG Report on Jobs also showed that demand for permanent staff both inside and outside IT continued to improve in May for the eighth consecutive month. However, the overall growth in demand for jobs eased for the second month running.

In terms of temporary roles, demand for IT workers rose modestly since last year.

The report showed that skills in enterprise software and IT security are in short supply among permanent IT workers. Meanwhile, developer skills are lacking among temporary IT workers.

“The June report on jobs shows that job vacancies continue to grow but at a slower rate than previous months,” said Kevin Green, chief executive of REC.

“On the upside, professional recruiters have identified a number of job categories – including accountants, HR professionals, software developers and chefs – where suitable candidates are in high demand.“
