University of Westminster appoints Thus to install backbone

The University of Westminster has chosen network provider Thusto create a core communications network linking seven campus sites across London.

Staff and students will gain high speed data transfer rates of 10Gbps when connecting to the internet and JANET (Joint Academic NETwork) - the network that connects the UK’s education and research organisations to each other.

The new networking backbone will also provide bandwidth for transferring mission-critical research data between campuses.

The four new campus locations brought onto the network will be directly linked to its data storage and recovery site in Harrow, and all seven sites will be supplied and managed by Thus.

Lee Rose, information systems network manager of University of Westminster, said: ‘This network is a crucial investment for the University because it will give us the bandwidth and speed to benefit from dedicated teaching and learning applications, forming the basis of our research and the work we carry out on a daily basis.’

Rose says students, researchers, teachers and administrative staff all need to access high levels of content every day.

‘We needed to ensure our network would be capable of running at peak levels and providing optimum performance every step of the way,’ she said.
