Building firm replaces paper with mobile devices
Kier sends engineers real-time data to save time, fuel, money and paper
Kier Building Maintenance, which manages housing stock for a number of local authorities, has installed a mobile system to replace inefficient paper processes.
The firm carries out buildings maintenance on 50,000 houses in Sheffield and substantial stocks in Leeds, Ealing and Islington, on behalf of local authorities also uses the system to save on fuel and mobile phone call costs.
Kier needed to make its job allocation systems much more efficient and cost effective, says manager for responsive repairs and gas service Phil Oades.
'This not only resulted in a lot of mobile phone air time, but also interrupted the operatives when they were in the middle of existing jobs,' he said.
'We were also using a manual paper-based system for job scheduling, which was not only time and paper intensive, but also subject to human error or duplication.'
'The existing system meant that operatives had to return to the service centre to hand in completed job sheets.'
The system, provided by Pervasic, is now estimated to give Kier productivity gains of 1.5 additional jobs per worker per week, and has also made for a massive reduction in use of paper, the equivalent of a tree per day.
