AMD continues bounce-back with record quarter

Company cautious about coming months, however

AMD has posted another solid quarter

AMD has posted record first-quarter figures, logging $182m (£119m) in profit on revenues of $1.57bn (£1.03bn) following strong graphics sales.

The solid performance will be good news for AMD as the company seeks to put several years of dismal performance behind it.

AMD had lost ground to rival Intel during much of 2007 and 2008, after lagging development and an expensive merger with ATI in 2006.

However, the company generated an infusion of cash from the spin-off of its Global Foundries operation, and has returned to challenge Intel in the processor market and the courtroom.

AMD has also been boosted by general PC sales growth as the global economy recovers and customers move to new operating systems.

"Strong product offerings and solid operating performance resulted in record first-quarter revenue," said AMD president and chief executive Dirk Meyer.

"We launched our latest generation of server platforms, expanded our family of DirectX 11-compatible graphics offerings, and commenced shipments of our next-generation notebook platforms to customers."

AMD warned that the next few months may not be as fruitful, however, predicting revenues to be "down seasonally" in the coming quarter.
