HTCSense.com portal opens as Desire HD and Z launch looms

Site offers remote backup, configuration and security services for handsets

Users can send and receive text messages via the portal at no charge

HTC has opened up registration for its HTCSense.com portal, so users will be able to control, back up and manage their Desire HD and Z handsets from any computer.

The forthcoming handsets are the only devices listed as capable of fully supporting all the features on HTCSense.com at present as they will come with Android 2.2 and the latest version of the HTC Sense user interface.

Services will include the ability to send and receive text messages via the site at no charge and divert calls to any other number from the smartphones, if for example they have been left at home, the firm said.

Users will be able to trigger the device to ring loudly if it is misplaced, even if the device has been set to silent, HTC added.

Desire HD and Z owners will also be able to lock their devices and erase content remotely, with all data capable of being synchronised to a new handset via the cloud.

Other benefits of the site include the ability to register products for a warranty, receive a HTC Sense newsletter, and download ringtones and wallpaper for devices, according to the web site.

When registering, the site only asks if users own a Desire HD or Z. An HTC spokewoman confirmed to V3.co.uk that the firm is investigating which other existing handsets my be supported if any.

RIM launched a similar service for its BlackBerry handsets, dubbed BlackBerry Protect, in July. HTCSense.com has much in common with RIM's app as they both aim to provide enhanced security, and reduce aggravation for users by enabling extra control over the devices and backing up data to the cloud.

The Desire HD and Z devices are expected to arrive at the end of October, with an official release date still pending.
