Nokia confirms PureView camera technology to land on Windows Phone

Firm coy on whether 41-megapixel sensor will make it to the Lumia range

Nokia has confirmed that it will bring its PureView camera technology to Windows Phone devices, but a timeline is not yet available.

The Finnish manufacturer debuted the technology when it unveiled the PureView 808 handset during Mobile World Congress (MWC) last week.

The firm hinted that it would make the technology available on other handsets, and although Windows Phone was not mentioned by name it would be the next logical step.

"We will introduce PureView imaging technologies into future Nokia products and Jo Harlow, executive vice president of smart devices, confirmed that would include future Lumia products," a Nokia spokesperson told V3.

"We didn't confirm that [the Lumia] would include the 41-megapixel sensor and we haven't confirmed that it wouldn't. The aim is to continue to deliver innovation and new experiences using a combination of sensor, optics and software algorithms."

PureView debuted on the Symbian operating system because the technology was in development long before Nokia chose to use Windows Phone as its primary platform.

Although there are no timelines in place for Windows Phone handsets with the PureView technology, devices could be seen before the year is out.

"I can't say precisely when, but it will not take very long [to make the transition to Windows Phone]." Harlow told Finnish newspaper Aamulehti.

V3 managed to see a hands-on demonstration of the PureView 808 smartphone during MWC and the results of the camera were very impressive.

Aside from the 41-megapixel sensor the handset boasts a 4in Amoled display with 640x360 resolution, 16GB of internal memory and microSD card support.

The device is set to be released in May, with pricing to be confirmed.
