HMRC chief appointed to advise Gordon Brown on IT-enabled efficiencies

The Chancellor has commissioned Sir David Varney, chief executive of HM Revenue and Customs, to report on potential efficiency gains through Whitehall's Tranformational Government strategy.

According to the Budget delivered last week, ex-O2 chief executive Varney, will draw on the strategy to review how public service delivery channels can be made more responsive and efficient.

Varney is also the permanent secretary with responsibility for the shared services initiative for multiple public sector organisation to use the same administrative systems such as human resources and finance to avoid duplication and cut costs.
