Tumbleweed appliance scales up email security

Tumbleweed says its new Mailgate Appliance 6500 can filter a million email messages an hour

Messaging security specialist Tumbleweed has launched a new enterprise-class email security appliance promising greater ease of use, and more scalability and performance.

The Mailgate Appliance 6500 can cope with over one million messages an hour, allowing IT departments to cut costs by consolidating onto fewer appliances, said the firm's technical director, David Carey.

A raft of new features includes easier configuration controls and improved anti-spam capabilities generating fewer instances of false positives.

"Many large enterprises are looking to streamline by reducing the number of boxes and [investing in] more powerful ones, as well as ease of use and administration," said Carey. "A strong feature of the 6500 is the single point of administration."

The appliance can inspect both inbound and outbound content and features rules-based TLS encryption to ensure secure email delivery, Carey added. "A lot of IT managers feel they have an anti-spam and antivirus solution in place already but there's an increasing requirement to deal with outbound security," he said.
