Driver tracking software drives savings

Meachers Transport saves £15,000 a year after meeting new legislation

Meachers Transport is saving more than £15,000 a year following the implementation of driver tracking software to meet Road Transport Directive legislation.

The directive regulates the weekly working hours of drivers of commercial vehicles to an average of 48 hours a week and a maximum of 60 hours a week.

The software allows Meachers’ drivers to precisely record their working time, driving time, periods of availability and rest periods.

The information is sent from an O2 mobile device using its GPRS network and stored on a central server. It is instantly available to drivers to enable them to manage their time and comply with the legislation.

By accessing the software through the mobile device, Meachers maximises the time its drivers can work, providing real time management information to traffic planners via the internet.

The Xda IIi mobile device also provides a camera to record incidents.

Meachers general manager Chris Hodgson said: ‘With a large screen and an intuitive interface, O2’s mobile devices provide the ideal platform for RTDTrac software.

‘It has allowed us to minimise what could have been a very costly and administratively intensive piece of legislation. The extensive GPRS coverage means we can be kept continually up to date with our drivers’ working hours.’

The software and mobile access is saving the company £15,000 annually in administrative costs.
