Broadband boost for Scottish schools

Thus awarded £32m for South of Scotland Pathfinder project

The South of Scotland Broadband Pathfinder Project has selected Thus to provide its high-capacity broadband network to schools, libraries and council offices in a deal worth up to £32m.

The government initiative responsible for rolling out broadband in Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders will deliver a high-bandwidth data service to 410 connections, including 201 educational institutions.

The project is due for completion in 2008 and will help ensure that local public services have access to high-speed broadband, to improve efficiency and enhance learning and teaching practices. ‘Pupils will be able to have virtual courses and access to enhanced material,’ said project manager Derek Shaw.

Education minister Peter Peacock says the project will help connect Scotland.
