Nokia takes on Galaxy S5 with Lumia 930 Windows Phone 8.1 flagship
Promises smartphone will conquer the enterprise
Nokia has unveiled its latest Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone the Lumia 930 (pictured above), promising the handset will spearhead further growth for its enterprise market share.
Nokia has debuted the Lumia 930 alongside the Windows Phone 8.1 mobile operating system. Windows Phone 8.1 is designed to integrate Microsoft's mobile and desktop Windows versions and adds a host of new synchronisation features.
Other key updates include Microsoft's Cortana voice assistant service, new user interface customisation options and a pull-down notifications menu named Action Center.
Nokia's UK and Ireland president Conor Pierce said the inclusion of Windows Phone 8.1 will be a key selling point for business buyers. "Business is a very fertile ground for Windows Phone. Windows Phone 8.1 will help us engage with businesses of all sizes, be they enterprise, medium or small," he said.
"The 930, our new flagship, will continue this. Our beautifully integrated message is not a consumer campaign, it's a description of the fully integrated multi-screen ecosystem we're offering. We will have one voice [with Microsoft] and our responsibility will be to bring the incredible assets Microsoft has to life in our devices. This is an incredible opportunity. We will be much stronger together."
Pierce said Windows Phone currently has an 18 percent share of the UK business market, which is supported by recent analyst statistics that indicate the mobile operating system currently has an overall market share of just above 10 percent in the UK.
Business uptake is largely based on sales of lower-end Windows Phones, such as the Lumia 520, according to Pierce. The Nokia president said he expects the Lumia 930 to increase sales of Windows Phone in the top end of the business market.
The move puts the Lumia 930 in direct competition with numerous other enterprise-focused handsets, including the Samsung Galaxy S5. Samsung lists the Galaxy S5 as the perfect device for businesses, claiming its advanced Knox security service as a key selling point for enterprise customers.
Pierce downplayed the significance of the competition, claiming: "We know how competitive the high end is. We're really excited to bring the 930, which will continue our momentum. This will help us break into the high end."
The Lumia 930 comes with some top-end specifications, including a 5in 1080p full HD display, 2GB of RAM and a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. It will also feature an advanced 20MP rear-facing PureView camera with Zeiss optics and optical image stabilisation powers.
There is currently no word on the Lumia 930's price and Nokia declined V3's request for clarification. The Lumia 930 is due for release in June.
Nokia also announced the affordable Lumia 630 and Lumia 635 smartphones (pictured above) alongside the 930. Both the Lumia 630 and 635 feature 4.5in 854x480 touchscreens and will be powered by quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processors. They will also both come loaded with 512MB RAM, 8GB of internal storage and 5MP rear-facing cameras. The 635 will feature a single SIM, while the 630 will support dual SIM.
The Lumia 635 will arrive in May with the 630 following later in June. There is no word on either handset's price.
