Salford council secures its education network

City council uses security system to protect computers from internet misuse

Salford City Council is using a desktop control system to manage online activities for 26,000 students and 5,000 staff.

The system allows the council to remotely control access to the configuration of all the PCs and laptops in its education network, including the wireless computers that are widely used in the city's primary schools.

Without the desktop control it would have proved far more difficult to have such a massive network, says Salford'sprincipal infrastructure officer, Paul McCormack.

'it is an all encompassing, all-in-one control system and its ease of use is very impressive,' he said.

The system, Scriptlogic's Desktop Authority, has caused some indignation among student users because it prevents them from accessing restricted web pages, says McCormack .

'Truthfully, they don’t like it because we restrict their environment, but that is a benefit for me and my team from the network administration point of view,' he said.
