Nationwide deploys intelligent ATMs

Customers at UK branches to benefit from queue-busting self-service technology

Nationwide Building Society is installing next generation cash machines throughout its UK branches.

The installation of 170 ATM units is underway, with the first branch to get the technolgy being Nationwide’s flagship Cardiff branch.

The project is part of £300m programme to bring multi-channel banking to the high street and ultimately improve access to services for Nationwide customers.

The intelligent ATM system provided by NCR has been piloted in 10 Nationwide branches over the last three months.

Kevin Scott-Evans, head of ATM services at Nationwide said: ‘Self-Serve is our brand to promote the latest multi-transaction ATMs to our members.’

‘Our investment programme will drive improvements in our service levels across our postal, phone, internet, self-service and face-to-face channels.’

The new ATMs have been designed following extensive human factors studies. A centralised screen and compact user interface minimises unnecessary hand and eye movements.

The new screens are easier to use and provide increased security by reducing the potential for shoulder surfing and minimising the footprint.

Nationwide’s new ATM’s can will provide additional transactions compared with traditional machines.

These include automated cash or cheque deposits where the customer receives an image of the cheque on their receipt as proof of deposit and a breakdown of the cash denominations deposited printed on customers’ receipt.
