Storage software market sees growth as big suppliers expand

IDC report reveals major vendors are enjoying healthy sales

EMC is still the market leaders in software storage

The global storage software market grew 3.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2010 to see revenues of nearly £2bn, according to analyst firm IDC's latest Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software Tracker.

Laura DuBois, programme vice president, storage software at IDC, explained that the increase was the result of overall growth from the big suppliers: " These include EMC (up 13.3 per cent year on year), IBM (up 10.6 per cent), and NetApp (up 6.0 per cent)," said DuBois.

She also argued that growth was coming from four segments: "These segments are data protection and recovery (up 4.9 per cent year on year), archiving (up 8.2 per cent), storage management (up 5.8 per cent), and storage infrastructure (up 12.7 per cent)."

However, software security and storage firm Symantec dropped further behind leaders EMC in the software storage market, as its second quarter revenue fell over £23m year on year to £317m.

Its market share also dropped to 16.5 per cent compared with EMC's 24.4 per cent, according to the IDC report.
