$153m (£77m) tender launched for Norwegian firm Trolltech

Nokia will focus on cross-platform developments

Nokia is planning to buy Norwegian software company Trolltech for $153m (£77m) in a move to strengthen its internet services strategy.

The deal follows last year’s launch of Ovi - the phone giant's internet services brand – and will aim to support a cross-platform software strategy for mobile devices and desktop applications.

"The acquisition of Trolltech makes perfect sense," according to Ovum senior analyst Adam Leach.

"It was emphasised from the start that Ovi will enable services cross a number of platforms including web, PC and mobile-based platforms.

"Trolltech have proven technology in cross-platform development and there is a good synergy here for Nokia," he said.

With the Norwegian firm's software development frameworks and application platforms, third-party developers will be able to develop applications that work on the internet and Nokia devices.
