Missing Persons Helpline stops spyware

Trend Micro anti-spyware technology installed

The National Missing Persons Helpline (NMPH) has signed a deal with anti-virus firm Trend Micro to protect itself against IT security threats.

The UK charity will deploy Trend Micro's Anti-Spyware Enterprise product to help ensure confidential data remains safe.

NMPH is using email increasingly to communicate with people about missing persons and receives 100,000 emails a day.

But as the vast majority of email is unsolicited advertising or spam containing spyware the charity has decided to install new IT security systems.

The charity says it chose Trend Micro as it already receives anti-virus protection from the company and uses its ScanMail, Server Protect and OfficeScan products to protect five servers and 100 computers.

'We have kept our servers protected from viruses with Trend Micro’s Server Protect, enabling us to protect files and scan incoming and outgoing mail to user PCs,' said Tim Beaman, head of information and communication technology at NMPH

NMPH has also recently upgraded its ScanMail technology to improve spam detection.

'A lot of staff have commented on how clean their mailboxes are from spam,' said Beaman.
