Overland fills RAID 6 SAN gap

Devices add up to 26TB of capacity to storage area networks using 4Gbit/s Fibre Channel interfaces.

This week's Storage Expo show saw Overland launch a family of RAID 6 storage area network (SAN) appliances delivering up to 26TB of data capacity. The devices are aimed at small to medium size enterprises, many of whom prefer to buy complete storage hardware solutions from a single vendor, said Overland.

"A great deal of demand for this has come from resellers telling us that users want end to end solutions from the same company; now you can have primary, secondary and tertiary storage from Overland," commented Overland Ultamus RAID product director Bob Farkaly.

The Ultamus RAID product family connects either 12, 24, 36 or 52 SATA hard drives to a SAN through a 4Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface. As a rack mountable device it fits into either a 2U or 4U chassis, and Overland has paid specific attention to the cooling issues that commonly plague data centres and server farms.

"We've spent a great deal of time making sure cooling and heat dissipation has gone on properly; the device fits in a standard rack with lots of fans and airflow, redundant cooling systems and four hot-swappable power supplies," added Farkaly.
