BancTec no longer picks Blackberrys
IT support firm chooses smartphones to boost mobile working
IT support services company BancTec is to stop using BlackBerrys because of perceived weaknesses with the devices among its mobile workforce.
The firm will instead equip its 230 mobile employees with Palm Treo smartphones because it is platform independent unlike the BlackBerry.
BancTec needs its field engineers to service customers, file reports and receive instructions and data while out of the office without having to constantly call in or drive to a local office.
BancTec EMEA project director Peter White says the smartphones offer engineers a more comprehensive set of business and features and was more commercially viable.
‘It allows us to carry out truly mobile business,’ he said. ‘The smartphones are more straightforward for staff to use, allowing us to contact our staff over the phone, SMS or through a web portal from a single device.
‘The web portal will become central to the future of our business and touchscreen internet navigation is crucial.’
