Police rethink gun link plan

Certificate database to be linked to Police National Computer by March 2007

The Police IT Organisation (Pito) says it will link the national firearms certificate register to the Police National Computer by March 2007, reversing plans to press ahead with a standalone system.

Computing revealed last month that technical problems had further delayed testing of the National Firearms Licensing Management System, first proposed in 1997 (Computing, 26 January).

Pito this week showed a system to peers who have been critical of the project’s progress, and said the pilot will resume by May.
