LG DVD writer protects content

LG's new DVD writer can create password-protected disks

LG will this week release in the UK a DVD writer that can be used to secure content by creating password-protected disks.

The Super Multi Security DVD Rewriter GSA-H55N uses SecurDisc technology to protect CD or DVD media via a user-supplied password. The drive, which is available immediately from PC World and LG resellers, is also LG’s first 20x DVD writer.

Authors create a protected disk using the supplied copy of Nero Express 7. The resulting disks can be distributed to other users and read using a standard drive, but users may be prompted to download a small application, InCD Reader 5.5, to access the content. Users must also have the correct password.

The technology applies a unique digital signature to each disk, enables content to be copy-protected, and provides an integrity check to warn users to back up files on a CD or DVD if the media is becoming degraded.
