Speed boost for de-dupe kit
Data Domain's new appliance improves backups by stripping repeated content
Data Domain has introduced a new de-duplication appliance designed to strip repeated content from branch office backups.
The DD580 has been updated with a faster dual-core Intel Xeon chip that can
boost write performance by up to 50 percent, and additional hard drives that expand its index storage capacity to 20TB.
Priced at $120,000, the DD580 could face stiff competition from cheaper alternatives from EMC and Symantec, both of which have recently acquired de-dupe solutions. But Data Domain managing director of sales Kevin Platz said companies will be attracted to the DD580’s superior performance.
“We have written a dedicated hardware appliance. Most of the others are software solutions that run on standard Windows or Linux machines,” said Platz.
