Dell launches first laptop for harsh environments

Dell's Latitude ATG D620 is 'semi rugged' but should be tough enough for most offices

Dell has introduced its first ruggedised laptop aimed at users working out in the field or in other harsh environments. The model meets military durability standards and is designed to be protected against accidental knocks, vibration, moisture, and other hazards, Dell said.

Available immediately, the Latitude ATG D620 is described as 'semi-rugged' by Dell because it does not match up to the specifications for a fully ruggedised system. However, it boasts a cushion-mounted hard drive, a spill-resistant keyboard, port covers and high durability paint that mean it can be used in areas such as construction sites and by the emergency services, according to Dell.

“For professionals that predominantly work outdoors, a tougher, highly protective notebook with a screen that is easy to see in direct sunlight is critical to ensuring maximum productivity," said Dell's European director of Client Products, Eric Greffier.

The Latitude ATG, or All-Terrain Grade, is essentially a toughened version of the standard Latitiude D620 and can use the same hard drive image as that model. It is also compatible with peripherals designed for other D-series laptops, such as docking stations, port replicators and power adapters, Dell said.

As well as conforming to US military MIL-STD 810F specifications for vibration, humidity, altitude and dust, the Latitude ATG has comprehensive communications options. These include dual-band Wi-Fi supporting 802.11a, b, g or n connections, Bluetooth and an integrated 3G adapter for access to Vodafone's Mobile Broadband with a subscription.

The Latitude ATG D620 is based on Intel's Core 2 Duo processor with up to 4GB of memory, and has a 14.1in display optimised for outdoor use. The laptop is Vista-capable and priced from £995.
