RFID sales set to soar

Market to grow 12 times its current size by 2016

The market for active radio frequency identification (RFID) tags is expected to grow to more than 12 times its current size by 2016, according to research by analyst IDTechEx.

Active RFID use has grown steadily, making up over 20 per cent of all RFID spend, with several applications valued at more than $100m (£53.9m).

IDTechEX research suggests the value of active system sales, including tags, could soar from $550m (£296.2m) to $6.78bn (£3.7bn) in 2016.

Active RFID tags have their own internal power source, enabling them to transmit at high power levels and offer more reliable read rates.

The technology includes standards such as WiFi, ZigBee, Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) and Ultra Wide Band (UWB).

The largest order for active RFID was placed earlier this year, a $425m (£229m) contract from the US military, while more than 100 hospitals have installed active RFID RTLS in the past year with impressive results.
