BUPA warns managers about their health

IT managers are fat and unhealthy... don't shoot the messenger

Many managers in the technology and software industry are unhealthy and at risk of life threatening diseases, according to BUPA’s corporate healthcare assessments.

The BUPA survey found that one in ten senior level employees in the technology sector smoke, while nearly a quarter fail to take exercise once a week and well over half are overweight.

This puts the managers at risk of heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, diabetes and some cancers, the report warns.

The BUPA Wellness’ health assessment survey collected data from 20,000 employees over a period of 12 months. Over 2000 of the employees surveyed worked in the technology sector.

Dr. Peter Mace, BUPA wellness medical director, said managers should lead by example. “For a manager to be seen to be making their health a priority by making changes to their diet and lifestyle it will encourage employees to do the same and benefit the business because of a healthier workforce,” said Dr. Mace said.

However, the technology managers are healthier than a lot of the British population when it comes to drinking. The survey found that only four per cent of the managers drink at a level that could damage their health.
