Newsagent overhauls retail technology

United News signs five-year retail management contract

Hospital newsagent United News has signed a five-year contract to deploy retail management software, hardware and support across its 75 outlets.

The £2m contract will include the installation of HP retail-enabled PCs running its Epos and two mobile terminals and five years of support.

The mobile terminals are used for trolley sales, which United News conducts across hospital wards and the other for stock management. It will also include deployment of chip-and-PIN across all shops.

United News chose Torex Retail to provide the integrated technology and roll it out this summer.

To simplify maintenance and minimise down time, Torex Retail will also deploy HP’s Alteris software on the static Epos terminals. This will enable it to provide remote alerting and diagnostics, which will alert support service of potential problems such as overheating or other malfunctions.

United News will also install back office software linked across a wide area network to a hosted head office.

United News deputy chairman Paul Appell said: ‘This complete turn key technology delivers the breadth of technology we were looking for from mobile handheld terminals through to a hosted head office solution.’

It is also looking at the development of a technology concept store that will showcase a variety of emerging and new technologies from web-based CCTV through to kiosk and in-store media technology.
