A third of telecoms budgets allocated to mobile

Survey finds European enterprises increase mobile spending

European firms spend 32 per cent of their telecommunication and networking budgets on mobile communications, according to Forrester Research.

A study by the analyst says increased spending on mobile communications is a strategy that firms have found brings greater productivity, cost savings and improves employee morale.

More than 70 per cent of enterprises are using some kind of mobile application according to the report, and a third of businesses say that setting a mobile and wireless strategy and policy is a priority in 2006. For 16 per cent of businesses, mobile communications is a critical priority.

'It’s good news that enterprises are strategically planning for mobility and benefiting from it,' said Jenny Lau, author of the report.

'There is a risk that mobility will remain a strategic agenda point that doesn’t get realized. Firms must devise a strategy and plan pilots with users, set handset policies early and have contingency plans in place,' she said.

'It's best to start small. Firms should see how mobility can give existing infrastructure a boost rather than planning for an ERP overhaul at the outset,' said Lau.
