Embattled telecoms firm Cable & Wireless Worldwide has announced that its chief executive, Jim Marsh, has resigned with immediate effect and will be replaced by chairman John Pluthero.

The company confirmed it will now pump more cash into establishing its cloud computing offering, as it bids to stem dwindling receipts from its fixed-line business.

Cable & Wireless Worldwide said that its business customers were reluctant to loosen purse strings amid uncertainty in the global economy.

“I’ll be looking to take a more radical approach to building on our hosting, cloud and data services business,” said Pluthero.”

Marsh had been at the helm of Cable & Wireless Worldwide since Cable & Wireless split into two groups, the other being Cable & Wireless Communications. Marsh had been at Cable & Wireless since it acquired Energis in 2005 and has previously had roles at consultancy KPMG and at chemists Boots.

Marsh's departure comes amid lucklustre performance at the telecoms firm since its demerger.
