Nominet polls members on changes to .uk services

The registry for .uk domain names, Nominet, has called an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) after pressure from members to change the scope of its remit and offer additional services.

At the EGM, to be held on 22 November, it will be decided whether the organisation's Articles of Association and Memorandum of Association are to be altered so that it can offer services such as a UK version of Enum, according to Nominet chief executive Lesley Cowley. Enum is a US project that aims to transform the telephone number into a universal identifier that can be used across different devices and applications.

"We were set up with a very narrow remit, which was right for the time but now members are saying, 'You're a good registry and offer great customer service, so why not use those skills to do other things for us?'" she explained. "We're a not-for-profit business, so we could do Enum reliably and cheaply and according to a membership model."

Members can also vote on a proposal to change to an electronic voting system. Currently, votes must be made in person at the general meeting in Oxford or by post, by signing and sending off the proxy form contained in the EGM pack sent out to all members, by 20 November.
