Apple macOS 12 Monterey beta now available for download

Apple says it will officially release macOS Monterey towards the end of 2021

Apple has released a first public beta of macOS 12 Monterey, allowing non-developers with a compatible Mac or MacBook to try out an early version of the operating system, ahead of its public release.

The company announced the beta at WWDC 2021 on Thursday, a day after releasing new public betas for iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and watchOS 8.

Apple said it will officially release macOS Monterey as a free upgrade towards the end of 2021.

Since a public beta is an early version of the software, users should be wary about installing it on a primary device, as they might encounter various bugs, incomplete features, and incompatibility with third-party apps. If they are still adamant to use it on their primary device, they should remember to back up all important data first.

According to the Verge, the new macOS Monterey has the same general look and feel as its predecessor, macOS 11 Big Sur, although it also brings several new features for users.

Safari, which has undergone some tweaks in the new version, now comes with an updated tab bar and support for tab groups. The URL bar is now next to the tabs, giving more browsing space. Another noticeable change is a rounder appearance for the tabs.

FaceTime offers support for spatial audio, portrait mode and voice isolation for reducing background noise. With portrait mode, users can make the background blurred while on a call.

Apple says portrait mode will also be available for adoption in third-party apps as well.

There's also a new feature called SharePlay that enables Apple TV users to watch TV, listen to music, and share their screens with one another. In addition to Apple products like TV+ and Music, SharePlay will also work with streaming services from some other players, including HBO Max, Disney Plus, Hulu, Paramount Plus, PlutoTV, Twitch, MasterClass and TikTok.

The Quick Note feature gives users an easy way to jot down thoughts while reading an article (or viewing items in Photos, Maps, or other apps).

Shared With You is another new feature that helps to keep track of the links, music, news, podcasts and photos that people send in messages.
