Part of the Tech Women Celebration 50 – a curated list of some of the most inspirational women working at all levels of tech

Meera Venkatachalam - I am a senior Quality Engineering leader at Lloyds Banking Group, specialising in payments and financial technology. With over 15 years of experience across banking, retail, and insurance, I have built a strong track record of delivering complex, large-scale transformation programmes in highly regulated environments.

In my current role, I lead quality engineering initiatives within the Global Payments Platform, driving automation-led testing, API-first strategies, and industry-wide integration programmes. I have played a key role in critical initiatives for UK's High value Domestic & International Payments, strengthening system resilience and improving delivery confidence across multi-team ecosystems.

Beyond delivery, I am passionate about people and inclusion, mentoring talent, championing diversity through WomenConnectTech, and advancing innovation through AI-driven testing practices. I strive to combine technical excellence with purposeful leadership to create meaningful, lasting impact.

Tell us about your biggest achievement to date

One of my proudest achievements is the transformation I have driven in my journey since joining Lloyds Banking Group in 2023. Despite a decade of consulting experience, I rebuilt myself in a new environment, evolving into a recognised voice across delivery, leadership, and community impact.

Within a short time, I earned the trust to contribute to payments transformation programmes ensuring Lloyds' compliance with Bank of England initiatives. I played a key role in end-to-end System Integration Testing across complex ecosystems - identifying high-impact defects, improving release confidence, and strengthening collaboration across teams and partner banks. This work supported reliable, compliant payment processing at scale.

Beyond delivery, my leadership growth has been impactful. From starting as a silent observer in WomenConnectTech, I progressed to organising flagship events such as International Women's Day with Google and later became a panel speaker.

I have also supported Lloyds' brand through data filming initiatives and financial education volunteering, aligned to Helping Britain Prosper. This journey is my biggest achievement, not just for what I have delivered, but for the leader I have become, growing and uplifting others.

What is the most significant challenge you have overcome?

Not getting into technology but staying relevant within it. Entering the industry through campus recruitment was the easy part; the real challenge has been continuously evolving through every wave of technological disruption.

Over 15 years, I have navigated multiple shifts, from traditional testing to automation, agile transformation, digital banking, and now AI-driven quality engineering. Each transition required me to unlearn, relearn, and step outside my comfort zone while still delivering consistently in demanding environments.

There were moments of uncertainty, where change felt faster than readiness. However, I chose to view these shifts as opportunities rather than obstacles, investing in continuous learning, adapting my skillset, and embracing innovation.

This mindset has enabled me not to grow into a leader who helps others navigate similar journeys. In technology, relevance is not achieved once. It is earned continuously through curiosity, resilience, and the courage to evolve.

Tell us something about you people would find surprising

That my journey has been shaped not just by opportunity, but by repeatedly proving my impact in environments where it was not immediately recognised. From an early stage, I built a strong foundation of excellence. But the real challenge came in my professional journey, where I often had to demonstrate my technical capability and leadership impact in high-pressure environments.

Each time I was challenged, I chose to respond through delivery, driving process improvements, enabling smarter ways of working, and introducing automation to improve efficiency ahead of critical releases.

Over time, this consistent approach helped build trust with my teams, managers, and stakeholders, transforming initial doubt into confidence and advocacy. What surprises many is that while I work in a deeply technical space, my real strength lies in connecting the dots = combining problem-solving, collaboration, and communication to create meaningful outcomes.
