Melissa Proxenos
‘Combining technical expertise with human-centred innovation’
Part of the Tech Women Celebration 50 – a curated list of some of the most inspirational women working at all levels of tech
Melissa Proxenos is an award-winning Chief Technology Officer with nearly two decades of experience driving large-scale digital transformation in fintech and enterprise technology. Currently leading technology strategy at Debtrak, she is responsible for global operations across the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Melissa has built her career on combining deep technical expertise with human-centred innovation, modernising systems, and embedding ethical AI into mission-critical financial platforms. Her leadership has delivered measurable business impact, from reducing key business processes from four days to 20 minutes through AI automation to cutting deployment times from over an hour to under two minutes with DevOps transformation. She has also driven Debtrak's ISO 27001:2022 certification, enhanced cybersecurity maturity, and introduced cloud cost optimisations that improved scalability and performance.
Melissa is a visible advocate for diversity in tech, mentoring women in AI, cloud, and software engineering through communities like SheCanCode, TechFoundHer, and Women in AI Ireland. She has been recognised with the Women in Tech Global Leadership Award and Women Leading Tech Engineer of the Year 2024, and is a finalist for the Female CTO of the year and the Technologist Visionary Award 2025.
What does the nominee consider her biggest achievement to date?
Melissa's most significant achievement is leading a full-scale digital transformation at Debtrak, impacting clients across highly regulated sectors. She spearheaded an AI-powered business transformation roadmap that reduced a key internal process, the tender response cycle, from four days to just 20 minutes. This automation not only improved operational efficiency but also increased win rates and drove measurable ROI.
She transformed Debtrak's development lifecycle by implementing modern DevOps practices, introducing GitHub Copilot for AI-assisted coding, and streamlining CI/CD pipelines. Deployment times were reduced from over an hour to under two minutes, significantly boosting productivity across globally distributed teams.
Melissa also led a major cloud modernisation initiative that cut AWS infrastructure costs while improving scalability and reliability. She introduced automated policies, enhanced system resilience, and delivered ISO 27001:2022 certification, reinforcing security and compliance for government clients across Europe and Australia.
In addition, Melissa is pioneering ethical AI in fintech by building predictive analytics models that identify financially vulnerable individuals, helping organisations respond with empathy. She established a Community Advisory Group to integrate trauma-informed and inclusive design principles into debt recovery systems, an industry-first approach that aligns technology with social responsibility.
These achievements position Melissa as an influential leader shaping the future of digital transformation and ethical AI.
What is the most significant challenge the nominee has overcome?
One of Melissa's greatest challenges was leading a global digital transformation during a period of organisational and economic uncertainty. When she joined Debtrak, the technology stack was outdated, processes were heavily manual, and teams were operating in silos across multiple regions. Resistance to change and the complexity of working in regulated environments made the transformation particularly challenging.
Melissa tackled this by developing a clear roadmap and engaging stakeholders at every level. She introduced OKRs to align technology with business objectives and fostered a culture of transparency and innovation. By implementing phased change, providing structured training, and building confidence through quick wins, she turned scepticism into support.
She also navigated the challenges of cybersecurity maturity. Moving from minimal security controls to ISO 27001:2022 certification within a short timeframe required redesigning processes, securing buy-in for investment, and embedding a security-first mindset across teams.
Throughout, Melissa maintained a people-first approach, balancing technical delivery with empathy and strong communication. This ability to manage change under pressure while achieving measurable results demonstrates her resilience, leadership, and visionary mindset.
Tell us something about the nominee that people would find surprising?
Melissa's path to technology leadership began far from the traditional route. Raised in a working-class family in South Africa where tertiary education seemed out of reach, she was the first in her family to pursue a university degree. Her parents may never be able to retire, and money for books or lab resources was scarce. She often studied by candlelight during power cuts. A scholarship for women in STEM was her only doorway into higher education, and she entered a degree programme as one of only a handful of female students.
Navigating financial hardship and gender imbalance built the resilience, grit and empathy that now define her leadership.
Years later, Melissa emigrated to Ireland, starting again in a new market and culture while far from family support. She drew on the perseverance forged in her early years to rise to Chief Technology Officer. That lived experience fuels her person-centred approach to leadership and her commitment to designing technology for social good.
Whether building trauma informed digital journeys for people in financial distress or mentoring women who doubt they belong in tech, Melissa shows what is possible when opportunity meets determination.
