Peter Upfold

Part of the Rising Stars 30 — a list of the UK's most talented young tech professionals in 2025

Peter, a lifelong IT enthusiast, began his career tinkering with computers and teaching IT in higher education before joining Amnesty.

Over the past year, he has revolutionised the charity’s observability, teaching himself Zabbix, an open source monitoring tool. His custom scripts now proactively detect and resolve issues before they can have an impact, significantly reducing both downtime and the risk to Amnesty’s. Peter extended monitoring for domains and certificates across teh infrastructure to prevent outages caused by expired certificates, all while managing a full workload that included optimising cloud costs, saving the Amnesty £150,000 annually.

Beyond technical achievements, he has transformed team culture, fostering better communication and aligning technology solutions with the organisation’s mission.

“So much of Peter's impact at Amnesty has been his impact on the way we communicate with staff, and his understanding of and passion for the critical work that Amnesty does,” a colleague said.

When not at work Peter enjoys park running and classic city-builder video games.
