The AI industry was out in full force at the first ever AI and Machine Learning Awards last night, held at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower in Knightsbridge.

The quality of entries, especially for a first-year event, was extremely high, with all of the judges commenting on how difficult it was to choose winners in their categories.

Data scientist-turned-comedian Nigel Ng joked about Hadoop, self-driving cars and AI buzzwords, keeping everyone laughing throughout the night.

Guests arrived to a champagne reception.

As guests sat down, Computing's Tom Allen gave an opening speech covering the great strides that AI has enabled, as well as the need for transparency and ethics in both industrial and social approaches to the technology.

Then it was time for dinner!

Nigel Ng kept everyone entertained before beginning the serious part of the evening, kicking off by saying that the earliest self-driving cars will be about as helpful as Microsoft's Clippy: "'I'm having a heart attack - take me to the hospital!' - car drives to a funeral parlour - 'Sorry mate, roadworks, I've calculated you're not going to make it.'"
