Apple to offer MacBook Pros with AMD Radeon Pro Vega graphics from 'late November'

One more thing that Tim Cook, surprisingly, didn't mention at Apple's big launch this week

One more thing that Tim Cook didn't make a big fuss of at Apple's big launch yesterday: the company is planning to bring AMD Radeon Pro Vega graphics to the high-end MacBook line from "late November".

The upgrade will be available as one of two options for the 15-inch MacBook Pro: Radeon Vega Pro 16 and Radeon Vega Pro 20.

However, Apple didn't go into great detail about the planned upgrade to the MacBook Pro, which was only released in its latest incarnation in the summer.

"Apple also today announced new MacBook Pro graphics options that will bring powerful Radeon Pro Vega graphics to MacBook Pro for the first time. These new graphics options deliver up to 60 percent faster graphics performance for the most demanding video editing, 3D design and rendering workloads," it revealed. And that's about it.

However, the benchmark referenced comes with the huge caveat that it was tested against a lower-end MacBook Air, which is scarcely a like-for-like (or pound for pound) comparison.

The upgrade would appear to be in the form of discrete GPUs, rather than the Intel Kaby Lake-G processors with integrated AMD Radeon RX Vega M graphics.

The Radeon Vega Pro 16 and Radeon Vega Pro 20 GPUs will also come with a decent 4GB of dedicated HBM2 video RAM, and twice the memory bandwidth of current generation 15-inch MacBook Pros.

The current offerings come with the Radeon Pro 555X GPU for a mere £2,349 and the Radeon Pro 560X GPU for just £2,699. Both are based on the Polaris 21 architecture, and were only introduced in the Summer.
