Who won the console wars, XBox One or Playstation?

November was a strong month for gaming, but which console came out on top overall?

Consumers are flocking to the latest Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo devices in the run up to Christmas, says analyst firm NPD.

According to the organisation, consumers shelled out loads of money on getting the latest games consoles and accessories in November.

The month saw big hoosts in sales for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. But the firm said there wasn't a clear hardware winner.

Although gamers tended to buy more PlayStation 4s than the Xbox One or Nintendo Switch, people actually spent more money on the latter devices, reports VentureBeat.

Sony, according to the industry tracking company, still has the biggest "momentum". So far, the firm has shipped more than 70 million of the devices.

Mat Piscatella, an analyst at NPD, said:"More units of PlayStation 4 hardware sold in November 2017 than any other month life-to-date.

"PlayStation 4 is the best-selling video game hardware platform year-to-date."

Overall, 2017 has been a big year for the gaming industry, in particular November. Last month, spending on games consoles grew by 52 per cent to $1.1 billion.

NPD said this growth comes down to the fact that there are currently three popular devices on the market, giving consumers plenty of options to choose from.

However, as the analysts noted, the introduction of the $500 4K-ready Xbox One X system meant that Microsoft made the most money.

Piscatella added: "Year to date, hardware spending has grown 28 percent versus 2016 to $3.4 billion.

"Consumer spending on Nintendo Switch [and] plug-‘n'-play devices like the Super Nintendo Classic and the PlayStation 4 continue to fuel growth."
