Top CIO explains how he got to his position, and what skills IT leaders will need in future

Darren Price, global CIO at RSA Insurance, gives advice to anyone hoping to move into a C-Suite position, and says more CIOs will become CEOs in future

Darren Price, global CIO of RSA Insurance, has given Computing some words of wisdom around how to get to a C-Suite position.

Price, who came top in the IT Leaders 100 list this year, explained that one of the key tasks to become a CIO is to build your profile, and your network.

"Ensure you focus on a quality Personal Development Plan including quality coaching. You will be amazed at what you can achieve if you really focus on your career development and progression. Also having a supportive Manager/Organisational support is key."

Other CIOs have also commented recently on this topic, with many agreeing that a broad network and key relationships are crucial.

He also discussed how the CIO role is developing, explaining that it's no longer the role which simply runs the IT back office.

"The role is increasingly reporting to the Group CEO and is responsible for delivering business transformation, digital and customer initiatives. The CIO must be able to deliver business solutions and outcomes through the deployment of enhanced technology and business processes. Overall business and commercial skills are essential as success is being measured through a business operational lens - it's not just about making the technology work!"

Describing the roots of his own success in the role, he said that there is a "clearly defined approach to being successful and developing your career."

"Hard work, talent and building network/relationships are key. Having the right organisation who will support your development and give you opportunities to progress is also essential. You also need to have a little luck along the way and learn from your mistakes. Experience and wisdom are a great combination. People work for people and want to be supported, challenged and empowered to deliver, creating that culture, attracting, retaining and developing talent is behind a lot of my success."

And with businesses increasingly reliant on technology, Price feels that more CIOs will move into other C-suite positions, including COO and even CEO.

"I'm certain we will start to see more CIOs develop and transition into COO/CEO roles depending on the company and market sector. The role is naturally progressing to a COO role and therefore the top CIOs will transition to these roles going forward. I myself have already been a COO in the past and progressed to Group CIO."
