Apple unveils the Apple Watch Series 2 with built-in GPS and waterproofing
New dual-core microprocessor should speed it up, too
Apple last night unveiled Apple Watch Series 2, an updated version of its smart watch with an improved microprocessor, GPS and water resistance to 50 metres.
The most significant of these new features is arguably the improved S2 microprocessor. This dual-core chip is up to 50 per cent faster than the S1 in the original Apple Watch, the company claims, and offers twice the graphics performance from the built-in graphics co-processor.
As expected, built-in GPS is also included, which could prove a major selling point for those put off the first generation device. Apple was keen to tout this feature as a major boon for sports activities, as well as the fact the device is waterproof to 50m.
To this end Apple also partnered with Nike to launch a dedicated fitness-focused Apple Watch called the Apple Watch Nike+.
There's a new display, too, that the firm claims is two times brighter than before, and, at 1,000 nits, it's the brightest display the firm has shipped to date.
The new Apple Watch will also arrive running watchOS 3, which the firm first announced back at WWDC in June and today revealed will be rolling out to all on 13 September.
This will deliver faster apps thanks to the software's ability to store apps in memory, allowing them to launch and respond instantly. Native and third-party apps will launch seven times faster than in watchOS 2, according to the firm.
New APIs will allow developers to create watchOS 3 apps that integrate Apple Pay, as well as gain access to native functions like the fitness and motion tracking data, gestures, speaker audio and the CloudKit and Game Centre, and navigation has also been improved thanks to the addition of a 'favourite apps' screen and a Control Centre menu, much like that seen on the iPhone.
In terms of design, you'll be able to get the Apple Watch Series 2 in the same metal and woven versions as before, with Apple also launching an all-new ceramic and Nike-branded models.
The Apple Watch Series 2 will be available from £369 in the US, while the original Apple Watch - which has been given a 'Series 1' makeover and Apple's new S2 chip - will see its price drop to £269.
It will be available to pre-order from today and will see an in-store launch on 16 September.
