Acer announces Windows 10 convertible and all-in-one devices

Skylake-powered laptop and 17.3in hybrid launching this month

Acer has continued to embrace Windows 10 by launching two new devices optimised for Microsoft's latest OS: a refresh of the Aspire R 14 convertible laptop, and the Aspire Z3-700 all-in-one PC.

The Intel Skylake-powered Aspire R 14 features a more compact 360-hinge design than the previous model, still allowing it to act as a traditional laptop or be flipped around into a tablet configuration.

Overall, it weighs 1.9kg and measures 18.5mm thick, and includes up to 8GB of RAM, SSD storage and support for MU-MIMO wireless connectivity, which Acer said will enable up to three times faster downloads compared with standard 802.11ac.

UK-specific prices and release date information have yet to be announced, although the Aspire R 14 will launch in EMEA in "late October" starting at €799.

The Aspire Z3-700, meanwhile, is a large 17.3in touchscreen capable of standing upright via kickstand-style legs. Usable with a mouse and keyboard or as a standalone tablet, the Aspire Z3-700 can be fitted with Intel Pentium or Celeron processors, up to 8GB of RAM and SSD or HDD storage.

The 10-point touchscreen is set at 1920x1080 resolution, and the whole thing is 15.6mm in depth and 2kg in weight. It will start from £399.99 when it launches in the UK at the end of October.

These new devices look to take particular advantage of the Continuum feature in Windows 10 that allows the UI to adapt more closely to how the device is being controlled, switching between a desktop view for a mouse and keyboard setup and the tile-based 'Tablet mode' for touchscreen use.

"Acer has a heritage of delivering the best user experience through innovation in technology and design," said Acer corporate president and CEO Jason Chen.

"With Windows 10, we can now deliver a unique and consistent experience across our comprehensive product portfolio, be it notebooks, desktops, tablets or smartphones, and empower users to do great things with more personal and human technology."

The Taiwanese firm previously unveiled the Aspire One Cloudbook 11 and Aspire One Cloudbook 14, two sub-£200 laptops also designed with Windows 10 in mind.
