Top Tech stories this week: Paypal's global glitch, Safe Harbour and Surface Pro 4
Computing's top stories from the past seven days. Read all about it!
Here they are again: our seven most popular stories from the past seven days.
7. Three UK suffers 3G and 4G data outage
Three UK users in London, Newcastle, Manchester and Bristol were turning their phones off and on again in an attempt to connect to the internet. If they'd checked Twitter they'd have seen it was a service cut that was affecting quite a few Three users last Friday. Ah, but they couldn't could they?
6. European Court of Justice strikes down Safe Harbour
The big tech-political story of the week was the surprise (to some) ruling by the ECJ that Safe Harbour, the "you scratch my back" agreement that funnelled EU citizens data straight to the NSA, is invalid. While the spooks doubtless have other means, this could add up to a big headache for US firms that do business in Europe.
5. 'Microsoft reveals Surface Pro 4 and Macbook Pro-baiting Surface Book
Microsoft's Surface VP Panos Panay's revelation to the world of two new hybrid devices was almost the "full Ballmer" in terms of bombast, reports Peter Gothard, but isn't the Surface Pro 4 vaguely reminiscent of something we've seen before?
4. The 10 biggest corporate cyber security blunders
All your UK favourites including Carphone Warehouse, RBS and Morrisons sumptuously packaged for your enjoyment by Sooraj Shah.
3. Password-stealing malware targeting Microsoft Outlook Web App email
Cyber-criminals have come up with a new way of stealing corporate email credentials. Fortunately in this case mistakes have allowed investigators to discover the purpose of the malware they created, allerting organisations to take action.
2. Safe Harbour: My firm uses Google Docs - what do I do now?
Official advice: sit down, keep calm, breathe deep and DON'T PANIC. Regulators are still picking through the rubble of Safe Harbour and while many firms will need to make changes, there are still many known unknowns and a grace period is inevitable.
1. PayPal back after global fault hit every account Monday night
Electronic payments platform PayPal was hit by a major global systems failure on Monday that lasted for several hours, a story that was broken by Computing.
"This technical issue did not hit every account in the world," said a Paypal spokesperson, although Paypal refused to state exactly which areas had experienced the failure, and comments elsewhere suggested that users in the US were also affected.
Users were not informed of the failure unless they contacted PayPal by phone, reports Chris Middleton, leaving PayPal "swamped" by complaints from every part of the world, with some customers making payments twice, believing that the error must have been theirs.
A technical glitch compounded with a customer service failure means that PayPal is the subject of our top story this week. Congratulations!
