Toshiba unveils Windows 10 laptops starting from £199

Four Satellite ranges coming in July

Toshiba has unveiled forthcoming Windows 10 laptops based on Intel's 5th Generation Core chips or AMD's new Carrizo chips with Ultra HD displays and dual-array microphones to make the most of the Cortana intelligent personal assistant integrated with Windows 10.

Due to go on sale from the start of July, the new line-up comprises four ranges that overhaul Toshiba's consumer-focused laptops, with additional models and a further wave of business-focused laptops coming in the next month or two.

The new ranges comprise the entry-level Satellite C Series, the mainstream Satellite L Series, the Satellite P Series for high performance multimedia and games, and a larger version of the Satellite Radius convertible that Toshiba introduced last year.

Tony Alderson, Toshiba's senior product manager for Northern Europe, said that the new systems will ship with Windows 8.1 pre-installed to start with, but that they are all "Windows 10 hardware-ready". Buyers will, of course, be eligible to a free upgrade when Windows 10 launches at the end of July.

With a starting price of just £199, the Satellite C40-C (above) is the entry model in Toshiba's new portfolio. For this price, buyers get a dual-core Celeron processor with 2GB memory and 32GB of solid state drive (SSD) storage, with a 14in 1366x768 display and dual-array microphone for Cortana.

This is joined by the Satellite C55 and C70 models, which have larger 15.6in and 17.3in screens respectively. These have a more generous specification, with a choice of processors up to an Intel Core i5 or AMD A8-7410, up to 16GB memory and 2TB hard drive or 256GB SSD.

Designed for "everyday computing", the Satellite L50 Series also comprises 15.6in and 17.3in screens, with Full HD (1920x1080) an option in both sizes. These models are 20 percent slimmer than the equivalent 2014 line-up, according to Toshiba, and are available with processors up to Intel Core i7 or AMD A10-8700P. These have hard drives up to 2TB or 256GB SSD, with pricing starting at £329.

The Satellite P50 Series is designed for more demanding graphics or gaming, with a discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M graphics accelerator and the option of an Ultra HD (3840x2160) touch display with ChromaTune colour calibration on the P50t-C model.

These models are likewise available with processors up to Intel Core i7 or AMD A10-8700P and the option of hard drives up to 2TB or a 256GB SSD, with prices starting at £499.

Finally, the Satellite Radius 15 joins the Radius 11 that Toshiba launched last year. Like that model, the new one has a 360-degree hinge that allows the screen to fold all the way round until it is closed up again with the display facing outwards to be used like a slate-mode tablet.

The Satellite Radius 15 has a Full HD (1920x1080) IPS 15.6in touchscreen and weighs up to 2.25kg. It can be configured with processors up to Core i5, up to 16GB of memory and 2TB hard drive or 256GB SSD, and boasts a battery life of up to seven hours for all-day use, Toshiba said. Prices for this model start at £599.
