RBS, Natwest, Ulster Bank customer payments are 'missing' in new IT failure
600,000 transactions affected after another IT disaster at RBS
More than 600,000 transactions have gone "missing" overnight at Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) after yet another IT glitch at the troubled bank.
The problem affected customers across RBS, NatWest and Ulster Bank. RBS says that it has opened an investigation into the issue with its overnight payment processes. It said it had fixed the problem but that it would take some time for the transaction issues to be resolved.
On NatWest's Help Twitter handle, the Bank tweeted: "Some customer payments are missing this morning - we are investing this issue as a matter of urgency. If you have been affected and need to access funds today, please contact us on 03457 888 444 or visit your branch."
Customers flocked to Twitter to complain, with many suggesting that they are without their tax credits or indeed any funds as a result of the technical glitch.
RBS is no stranger to failures with its IT systems. In 2012, an IT failure left millions of customers unable to access online banking services. The disaster left RBS with a £125m bill to fix its systems, while it was also fined £56m by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in 2014 as a result of the same outage. Ulster Bank had also been hit with a separate £2.75m penalty from the Central Bank of Ireland for issues relating to the glitch.
The bank also suffered a glitch a year later on what is thought to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year, Cyber Monday. Thousands of customers were unable to access their accounts in the UK and the banks' smartphone apps on Android and iOS, and its online banking websites were all affected.
