Apple's next wearable will likely be released next year

The Apple Watch 2 will reportedly arrive in 2016, with LG remaining the sole supplier of display panels for the next-gen wearable.

Korean news outlet MK News has heard from 'sources' that the second-generation Apple Watch will be released next year, despite analysts having previously suggested that a new version of the smartwatch would arrive later in 2015.

MK News has also learnt that Apple has fully ditched its usual 'multi vender' policy to select LG as the sole provider of display panels for the so-called Apple Watch 2.

The sources, who are reportedly 'foreign officials knowledgeable with Apple', say the firm will stick with LG due to the company's proven fast production times and high quality product, which means it unlikely has to worry about panel shortages and possible delays.

The display will reportedly will be a similar P-OLED screen to that seen on the current Apple Watch due to its flexibility, low battery consumption and ability to offer a higher-resolution than traditional LCD screens.

No further details about the Apple Watch 2 have yet been revealed, but it likely will arrive on shelves in April next year.

Apple this week revealed new features coming to owners of its current smartwatch, outing WatchOS 2.0 during its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) keynote.

Support for native apps is chief among the software's new features, giving developers access to features such as Digital Crown, Taptic Engine, heart rate sensor, accelerometer and microphone. WatchOS 2 introduces Wi-Fi support, which enables the smartwatch to work independently, rather than relying on being connected to an iPhone.

An Activation Lock feature is also included in the update, following criticism that the Apple Watch can be easily reset by thieves given its lack of iPhone-style Kill Switch.

WatchOS 2.0 also brings with it a feature called Time Travel for improved navigation, Other features include the ability for apps to support video playback on the Watch's display, rewards offered through Apple Pay, and Nightstand Mode, which allows the Apple Watch to be used as a bedside alarm clock when it has been taken off a wearer's wrist.

WatchOS 2.0 is in the hands of developers now, with a general release to take place in October.
