Security dominated the headlines last week after numerous cyber attacks were uncovered. Kaspersky Labs revealed the existence of two hacking groups, one dubbed Carbanak which stole as much as $1bn from 100 banks by accessing systems using simple phishing techniques.

Meanwhile, the Desert Falcons group was revealed to have hit targets ranging from military and government bodies to research institutions, political activists and energy companies in Egypt, Palestine, Israel and Jordan. Over 3,000 Android and Windows devices have been affected so far.

Lenovo devices were also in the spotlight last week after it emerged that several products were coming bundled with software called Superfish that posed major security risks. Lenovo moved quickly to calm the situation and has released a tool to remove the adware.

Elsewhere, FireEye reported a new threat to Apple's iOS system, dubbed Masque Attack II, that poses a major data theft risk to iPhone and iPad owners.

Away from security concerns, the UK's mobile phone operators face a sizeable £159m combined increase in the licence fees they pay for the use of spectrum, after Ofcom released the latest consultation on its proposals.
